A Sacred Journey, a Test of Endurance
Every June, as the monsoon clouds gather, Maharashtra comes alive with the Wari — an 800-year-old spiritual tradition where thousands of Warkaris walk to Pandharpur. This 21-day pilgrimage honours the legacy of saints Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram. It’s a testament to devotion, simplicity, and community.
But it’s also a physically demanding journey:
- 25–30 km walked each day
- Irregular meals, rest, and hydration
- Minimal access to clean sanitation and first aid
While the spiritual rewards are infinite, the physical toll is undeniable.
DHS Steps In: Healthcare Where You Want It, When You Want It
This year, Doorstep Health Services (DHS)supported the Palkhi from June 20–22 (Pune leg), delivering timely and efficient healthcare to over 1.5 lakh pilgrims. Sponsored by the CSR initiative of Grihum Housing Finance Pvt. Ltd., DHS was there — not just to treat, but to reassure, prevent, and care.
What We Delivered
- Pilgrims served: 1.5+ lakh
- Setup: 12 triage points + 2 mobile medical units
- Consultation time: Under 5 minutes per patient
- Critical cases handled: 0 — due to early intervention
- Average response time: <10 minutes
Services Offered
- Rapid triage & first aid (cuts, sprains, blisters)
- Chronic condition management (BP, diabetes)
- ORS & electrolyte distribution
- Health education: hydration, foot care, sugar management
Our Vision in Action: “Health where you want it, when you want it.”
How We Prepared for Scale & Safety
At DHS, we don’t just show up — we forecast, map, and mobilise (military style!)
- Mapped high-footfall zones (~1.5 lakh every 8 hours)
- Prioritized 1% of footfall as triage-ready load
- Pre-packed medicine kits by shift, cold chain for injectables
- Emergency-ready: even prepared for disasters or stampedes
- 15-minute grid deployment, GPS tracking, radio coordination
- Local volunteers + signboards ensured smooth patient flow
Result: No medical escalation required, high community satisfaction
Planning Large Events: The DHS Approach
Any mass event must plan for both routine operations and emergency scenarios.
For the Wari, we:
- Conducted route mapping and footfall planning
- Forecasted clinical load using a triage matrix (I/II/III)
- Stocked medicine by need: musculoskeletal pain, fevers, dehydration, diarrhoea, hypoglycemia
- Ensured mobility: Medicines and emergency kits transported daily
- Assigned trained doctors for each zone, equipped with emergency drugs
Key Principle: Anticipate everything, from mild fevers to large-scale crises.
Keeping Tradition Alive, Together
The Wari is not just a spiritual act — it is a living embodiment of community, discipline, and resilience. Supporting it means more than offering water or first aid. It means showing up — prepared, committed, and respectful of the journey.
At DHS, we are proud to walk with the Warkaris. Not just this year, but every year.
